The PODS Association has officially launched the SCADA Link (SL) Module, marking a major advancement in how pipeline operators can manage sensor data, increase compliance, and streamline operations. Developed in partnership with Pipeline Research Council International (PRCI) and the American Gas Association (AGA), this module is now available for download to PODS members.
If you’re not yet a member, now is the time to join PODS.
What Is the SCADA Link Module?
The SCADA Link Module links SCADA sensor data directly to GIS spatial data, enabling operators to track and manage pipeline measurement sensors and panels with unmatched accuracy. This connectivity provides a unified view of field equipment and enhances modeling, inspection, and safety programs.
The module was developed in direct response to PRCI’s work with PHMSA on the MEAS-2-01 Pipeline Safety: Gas Pipeline Leak Detection and Repair project. The project highlighted the importance of improved sensor location accuracy to support advanced leak detection technologies and computational pipeline monitoring (CPM).
Why It Matters
Historically, connecting SCADA data with pipeline attributes has been fragmented, leading to inefficiencies and potential safety risks. The new SL module addresses these issues by offering:
Improved Audit Compliance
Ensures sensor points are properly located and documented per API RP 1168 guidelines. Each transducer is now identifiable both in SCADA systems and geospatially in PODS.
Enhanced Flow Calibration
Operators can now align sensor readings with pipeline attributes like wall thickness and diameter, improving hydraulic modeling and leak detection systems.
Route Optimization for Field Teams
Field crews can now create smarter inspection routes, saving time and improving maintenance efficiency.
Standardized Data
The SL module uses consistent naming conventions and unique IDs, futureproofing systems for mergers, acquisitions, and integration across platforms.
Track Sensor Inspections
Inspection activities can be fully documented within PODS, allowing seamless survey tracking and cross-referencing of maintenance logs.
Technical Highlights
-
SENSOR_POINT and SENSOR_PANEL feature classes allow precise tracking of pressure sensor and panel locations.
-
Compatible with Computational Pipeline Monitoring (CPM) systems for advanced leak detection and LUF (Lost and Unaccounted For) calculations.
-
Ideal for managing hydraulic sensors, which represent about 10% of SCADA infrastructure.
Built by the Pipeline Community, for the Pipeline Community
This module is the result of a collaborative effort:
-
PRCI, with Gary Choquette leading
-
Experts from AGA GIS and Control Room Committees
-
Industry SMEs like Russel Treat and Byron Coy, P.E.
About PODS
The Pipeline Open Data Standard (PODS) is the only geospatial data model purpose-built for pipeline operators. With over 3 million miles of pipeline data across 39 countries and 200+ operators, PODS powers everything from integrity management and regulatory reporting to digital twins of pipeline systems.
For 25+ years, PODS has united pipeline professionals around a common goal: safer, smarter, and more connected infrastructure.
Don’t Miss Out
The SCADA Link Module is more than just a technical tool—it’s a game-changer for how pipeline operators manage data, compliance, and safety.
