Abstract
The PODS Association’s Next Generation (“Next Gen”) initiative was a complete re-design and modernization of the PODS Pipeline Data Model, driven by the Association’s 2016–2019 Strategic Plan and nearly 20 years of implementation experience. The resulting PODS Pipeline Data Model Version 7.0 was designed to give operators greater agility to build and extend the model, interoperate through standard data models and a consistent application interface, share data using well-defined data exchange specifications, and optimize performance for bulk loading, reroute, inspection, and history data.
The paper details the Next Gen design principles and logical/conceptual structure, multi-platform support (Esri ArcGIS, open source GIS, and RDBMS platforms), alignment with Esri’s ArcGIS for Pipeline Referencing (APR), the new XML-based Data Exchange Specification (DES), and the first incremental release — PODS Lite — made freely available to all pipeline operators and service providers, PODS members or not.
