Abstract

Oil and gas has historically been cautious in adopting emerging technologies, and digital twins — virtual replicas of physical assets enriched with real-time data — are no exception. This paper examines the behavioral and cultural barriers to adoption, including resistance to change, data integrity concerns, and integration complexity across multi-vendor ecosystems, and quantifies the industry’s digital maturity gap against automotive and aerospace peers (Oil & Gas at roughly 6 out of 10 by 2025, versus 9–9.5 for automotive and aerospace).

The adoption of industry standards — CFIHOS, PODS, and ISO 15926 — is identified as critical to enabling interoperability, improving data quality, and reducing integration costs across digital twin architectures. Drawing on industry case studies, the paper quantifies realized benefits: 15–30% reduction in unplanned downtime, 30–70% reduction in site inspection visits, and 10–25% reduction in overall maintenance costs, with typical payback periods of 12–24 months.
