Written in the wake of the 2010 PG&E San Bruno pipeline rupture and the California Public Utilities Commission’s subsequent report on PG&E’s fragmented records management, this article explains why data integration is both a legal responsibility and an operational benefit for pipeline operators. It covers the categories of data required for pipeline integrity management (PIM) under ASME B31.8S, the role of a data model in providing a “single master source of information,” and how PODS’s linear referencing system provides a common reference for integrating records across sources. It closes with a clear explanation of the differences between PODS and Esri’s ArcGIS Pipeline Data Model (APDM), and covers the modularization introduced in PODS 6.0 (released December 2012).
