Abstract

Most pipeline GIS applications operate in 2D, which limits their usefulness for visual pipeline design, immersive training, remote supervision, and online/offline simulation. This paper, developed through the Mitacs Elevate Postdoctoral Research Program, describes a 3D Pipeline Spatial Data Model (3D-PSDM) that takes an existing pipeline data model — PODS — as its foundation and extends it toward web-based 3D GIS application.

The 3D-PSDM adds 3D terrain modeling (via a “PipelineDEM” raster dataset and remote sensing imagery), and appends “3D_description” and “Texture” fields to relevant PODS tables to store X3D-encoded 3D geometry for pipeline facilities. The implementation uses X3D — an open, XML-based, ISO-ratified 3D scene standard — for interoperability, and Level of Detail (LOD) rendering to manage performance for large 3D terrain datasets. The model was validated using pipeline data from PetroChina Pipeline.
