Abstract
Asset knowledge is essential to confident compliance, enterprise risk management, and a modern operator’s management systems. The PODS Model is a starting point for organizing and standardizing pipeline data to capitalize on it as a true asset — critical given that most significant pipeline incidents have shown asset knowledge to be paramount to safe operations.
The paper covers the importance of holistic asset knowledge and PODS Resource Centers, risk-informed decision-making and continuous improvement, the importance of data ownership and governance, and how operators are increasingly budgeting data projects as capital expenditures rather than O&M — citing risk reduction and ongoing compliance. It closes with a look at two active PODS working groups developing new modules to support the full asset lifecycle.
